The Methodology
  • On February 21st, YTV and In-Sync research met with 48 kids aged 9 to 12 as part of the ongoing “YTV SWAT Team” (kids advisory panel) and talked to them about how they feel about watching TV with their parents.


  • In addition, parents were asked to fill out a questionnaire on the same topic while their kids participated in these focus groups. Here’s what they had to say.

Time spent together watching TV is considered “family time” for both kids and their parents. It's a time to connect, laugh and share in feeling good together.

  • "The best part of having my parents with me when I watch TV is comfort and quality time. I really love my parents and I like to be with them and when I'm alone I feel lonely."

  •  “It’s fun to watch TV with my parents because I usually hang out with my friends and I don’t see them that much.”

  •  “Our parents want to know what we like and spend time with us.”

  • “We don’t get a chance to sit down and be a family too often, so when all of us can be together and watch TV, it gives the feeling of togetherness.”

Watching TV is an opportunity for kids to physically get close to their parents.  It’s a safe and acceptable time to snuggle together.

  • "My mom always comes and snuggles with me."

Kids like the fact that parents can help them understand complex or confusing things that are happening on TV.

  • "Sometimes when something confusing comes on, then I can ask my mom what's happening.“

  • "I like having my parents there ‘cause we can talk about what's going on. If something spooky is going to happen, I can say yikes, what's going to happen and they make me feel better."

  • “I love TV, enjoy laughing with my kids. If we see something scary or off the top or even sexual, I want to be there with them to explain things to them.”

TV provides kids and parents with common things to talk and laugh about, both during and after the show.

  • "I like watching with my parents, because you sit there and talk to them about the movies and shows. You kind of get to be interactive with the show and your parents."

Shows that are humorous provide the most comfortable and most enjoyable family time for parents and kids.

  • "Sometimes when my parents are with me, we act out or repeat weird or crazy stuff and then we all start laughing."

Kids would prefer their parents not watch shows that deal with "mushy" things like kissing or falling in love as it makes them feel uncomfortable.

  • “I don't like it when I'm watching a show that I like and my parents come in and start to make comments between skits."

  • "Parents can also take the fun away from watching TV when they start to explain too much.”

  •  “If my friend was over and we were watching the Simpson’s or Family Guy and there is a bad word, they will tell me to shut if off.  It’s embarrassing because they make me feel like a baby.”

  • “It’s not good to watch shows with swearing in them with parents because parents tell you not to swear and then they hear the words on TV and tell you to shut if off.”

  • Kids relate better to the YTV shows whether it is a cartoon or reality (real actors), the kids react well to it – no embarrassing scenes.”

Top YTV Shows That Kids & Parents Enjoy Together
  • According to Nielsen Media Research, the top season-to-date (as of July 4/04) YTV shows  for Viewers 2+ are SpongeBob SquarePants, Fairly OddParents, Rugrats All Grown Up, Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius, and 3 Hairy Thumbs Up (YTV’s weekend movie timeblock). This data supports the findings from our latest YTV SWAT panel session, that suggests that both kids and parents most enjoy watching movies and humorous shows together.

The Co-Viewing Universe:
Moms & kids watching TV together
  • YTV is  #1 with a 17% share of total purchasable co-viewing hours for Women 18-49. Which means that moms (18-49) spend more time watching commercial TV with their kids (2-11) on YTV than any other network -  including CBC and CTV and Global.


  • 38% of all hours tuned by Women 18-49 on YTV is co-viewed with their kids 2 to 11.


  • YTV is #1 with a 58% share of total purchasable co-viewing hours in kid 2-11 programs. In other words, 58% of all the hours kids (2-11) spend watching commercial kid programs with their moms (18-49) is done on YTV.

Conclusion
  • Kids and parents enjoy watching TV together, and parents know that TV is a vehicle that allows them into their child's world. Parents make time to watch great family friendly shows with their kids, in order to be apart of their lives and share quality time together.


  • SpongeBob SquarePants, Fairly OddParents, Jimmy Neutron and 3 Hairy Thumbs Up (YTV’s weekend movie timeblock) are great examples of favorite shows that parents enjoy watching with their kids.


  • YTV is the #1 specialty network for total purchasable co-viewing hours for both moms (women 18-49) and their kids (2-11).
